If you were there for AL Live Episode 2, Landing Your Ideal Library Job, you know we had a great discussion with a very active Q and A. In fact, the audience participation was so active that we were overwhelmed by audience questions and comments, and our panel only had a chance to address a small fraction of those that came up.

- Can you talk about candidates who have not "worked" in a library? I am nearing the end of my MLS and have 26 years of Retail Management experience, not library experience.
- Having been on many search committees, the biggest issue is that library candidates are all the same with the same background. So how can you make yourself different from anybody else?
- What are some ways to find out about the culture within a workplace?
- Are there statistics about how many library students there are to the jobs that are available?
- I'm told that if you have a strong technical background (web development/design, database administration, system administration) it's entirely possible to find library jobs (with long-term prospects) without a library degree. Is this true?
- I have the MLS but have been stuck as a paraprofessional for 8 years any advice for me?
- I've seen an increasing number of Instructional Librarian positions lately. Are these on the increase?
- How can I make my personal blog and online portfolio more impactful/effective in job search?
- What are your impressions of Advanced Certificate Programs after the MLIS? Are they of value to employers? And, do PhD's matter a lot?

Candidates Who Have Not Worked in a Library
For candidates who haven't worked in a library, but rather in other fields, the important thing to do is tailor your resume/application/interviews to the things from your past work experience that will be beneficial to the library. I had 20 years experience in Radio and Television production as a producer, director and copywriter - Not what you'd normally think of as a natural fit. BUT as a result of this experience I was comfortable with reaching out to people in the community, knew how to set up, organize, promote and oversee events, was comfortable in designing displays and in talking to the media. Having worked in a field where things have to be done ON TIME (to the exact second), I had developed a high sense of punctuality and responsibility, both valuable to any employer in any field. The library that hired me started me out working the reference desk, but allowed me to design and install displays, and oversee adult programs for the library. After a couple of years, they were able to create a position that would allow me to do displays and events full time for all the branches in our system. If your background is in retail, there are things like merchandising, display design and probably other ways of doing things that will benefit the library. Make sure they know that.
